After 10 years of training as an Army chef, Alan Burns returned to the UK to continue his gastronomic education in five-star hotels and Michelin starred restaurants in Scotland & England. A brief spell in commercial food sales followed, before he got back to his roots & into the kitchen, taking over the restaurant five years ago - and stamping his very individual mark upon it.
Although the eatery was formerly known as Gingerhill, a seafood restaurant, Alan has recently changed the name feeling that so many other things had changed since his ownership the name had to go. So as people could see that the restaurant is continually evolving.
Alan and his kitchen team have developed a contemporary Scottish menu. There are two menus to choose from, a fixed price 3 course menu and the "Temptations" menu, a number of smaller "Tasting" dishes - meaning that there's now something to suit every palate, no matter how discerning.
But The Wild Bergamot doesn't try to be all things to all men - the menu is dictated by the team's dedication to sourcing and delivering top-quality seasonal produce. You won't find weedy, tasteless forced asparagus or bland beef served up, as Alan explains: "We use excellent suppliers, local where possible - people who really know their stuff. See our suppliers page for more details of the great job they do, their expertise, coupled with our own knowledge, ensures that every dish is perfect.
The intimate dining room's no-smoking policy also means that diners are free to enjoy superb cooking in a clean atmosphere. However, the stylish lounge offers an opportunity for smokers to retire after their meal, relax and enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine from the restaurant's award-winning cellars that currently have wines from over a dozen different countries.
Although The Wild Bergamot is well established as one of the area's best fine-dining destinations, Alan & his team are still hungry for success, "We want to see people looking at the restaurant the same way as we do…… not just to grab a bit of grub & then home, but an evenings entertainment."
