For many a visit to the White Hart, with or without eating, would be to experience a typical old English pub, unspoiled and richly redolent of the past. With John Dicken now in the seat there is a further reason for going. In fact, not all that much has changed except that the food is now perhaps more Anglo than French, but the same high standards that apply elsewhere in the Dicken Empire, are in force here. One could start with the sweet potato and coriander soup. Following the more exotic angle consider the roast cod wrapped in pancetta on split-pea puree with a mint and mustard dressing. To round off one could do little better than the apricot and almond tart with crème fraiche, except possibly the tiramisu with cantuccini biscuits. House wines go from £9.95 to £18.50 for a decent Australian Reisling. There are also interesting clarets of a certain age, which repay close attention and will still leave you solvent.
