In the early days of New York eateries, Brooklyn families used to set up restaurants in their homes with guests often entering through the kitchen en route to the dining area for a home-cooked meal out. Such is the feeling when you walk through the side entrance to Katie's Diner, a modest American-inspired eatery overlooking Bruntsfield Links. Greeted by Geoff Ness of the husband and wife team running the diner, customers are lead into the dining room, passing Katie in the kitchen. With only half a dozen or so tables on the main (ground) floor, the downstairs is better suited for large parties. The menu, impressive considering the small staff, includes starters of garlic mushrooms and spicy prawn demons. While first seeming on the smaller side, they're sufficiently filling and palate whetting. The mains, truly super-sized, include options such as burgers, salads and nine varieties of steak, all accompanied by generous heaps of chips and coleslaw. The mustard steak is a rich, tender meeting of brandy, mushrooms, and steak. The spicy yet fruity blackened chicken salad is a nice alternative, although still one for healthy appetites. If you can manage dessert, the sticky toffee pudding is lovely. All wines on the wine list are under £10 (you can also bring your own for a £1 corkage).
