Bothy
Open time:
Mon-Sun noon-10pm
Housed in the former Puppet Theatre on Ruthven Lane, and opening just as this guide goes to press, this new addition to the West End's restaurant community has been designed to be as much of an urban haven as a Highland bothy. The Scottish theme consequently stretches throughout, with thistles on the tables, a stuffed pheasant mounted on one wall and friendly kilt-sporting staff. But flourishes aside, the decor is predominantly understated, with candles and dark wooden tables. The menu has traditional dishes, including the Bothy steak pie served with a rich gravy and root vegetables, and fish dishes such as springy fresh scallops, served with crispy bacon, leeks and tatties. Puddings include Scottish trifle, clootie dumplings and Highland bonnets (deep-fried choux pastry served with ice-cream). But these comparatively conventional dishes sit alongside quirkier touches such as starters of crispy deep-fried haggis or Tobermory cheddar omelette, as well as a surprisingly tasty, if luminous, Irn Bru sorbet. The lunchtime menu (noon-5pm Mon-Sat) is virtually identical to dinner, but includes teatime favourites macaroni and cheese, sausage and mash and beans on toast, and there's a three-course carvery on Sunday night (4-8pm).

A little hidden away gem in the west end of glasgow, a warm welcome is always on offer from the excellent staff! Fantastic, authentic food, the haggis is among the best I have ever tasted and the portions huge, I highly recommend the venison. whenever I'm in glasgow, I make the effort to go, full marks to the bothy open one in england please!

I love this wee restaurant with it's warm, homely atmosphere and superb
food - absolutely scrumptious! The staff are polite and attentive, but not
instrusively so. I always feel comfortable here - there's something quite
familiar about the place. I love coming back to The Bothy!

A lovely restaurant with a great feel to it but very disapointed by both the food and service after hearing great reviews previously. Two of our table had the soup to start which was extremely over salted, a very basic error for an aparently top class restaurant. The other starter was very pleasant, as were 2 of the main courses but the third main course of haddock and chips was dissapointing due to the sogginess of the batter. Our dissapointment in the food may have been overlooked if the service had been much better, the waiting staff were not unpleasant to us but did not seem very friendly either and certainly paid us the minimum attention possible; we were never even asked if we enjoyed our meal. Hopefully our experience was an exception to the normal and we were just unlucky but I don't think we will be returning soon to find out.

WHAT A PERFECT RESTAURANT, MY WIFE AND I WERE TREATED TO A VERY SPECIAL DINNER THERE ON SATURDAY AND IT WAS FANTASTIC. WE HAVE EATEN AT MANY FINE DINING PLACES AND THIS RESTAURANT IS ONE OF THE BEST. I WAS A FOOD BUYER FOR AN IMPORT COMPANY FOR MANY YEARS AND I KNOW MY STUFF ABOUT GOOD FOOD... THEY SERVE VERY GOOD FOOD. NOT ONLY DO MOST OF THE STAFF WEAR KILTS BUT THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE WAS "BRILLIANT", WELL DONE TO THE BOTHY.

Our party of six, which included four from abroad attended at our pre arranged booking time of 20:30 midweek to be ushered to a table which would normally seat four. The haggis starter lacked flavour drowned by a sauce and the steaks were not of the high standard I have had at this atmospheric restaurant. With the service charge built in to the final bill we left feeling a little let down from the high standards normally provided.
